Cage Cricket Officially Launches in Surrey

Against a backdrop more used to seeing the finest horses from all over the world perform, Cage Cricket landed firmly and squarely in Epsom as Surrey became the latest community to have a dedicated Cage Cricket team, following the likes of Hampshire, Oban and London in providing new opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to experience cricket.

Led by our Surrey Activators, Neil Bunting and Haidee Allen, youngsters from Phoenix Youth Club in Tadworth and Epsom Girls Cricket Club took to the court to receive their initial Cage Cricket introduction. Whilst the girls had previous experience, the boys (aged 11 – 15) from the Youth Centre were playing cricket for the first time, there was unanimous and spontaneous positive feedback from both groups.

Patricia Lewis MBE, the Youth & Community Worker for Banstead and Tadworth were equally exuberant, “I really wasn’t sure how the boys would react to this at all, but they have not only thoroughly enjoyed themselves, but taken on board all of the feedback and development pointers that they have been given. I know that they are looking forward to being able to play more sessions in the future, and I know that this will fit very well with more of our youth and community programmes across the area.”

A number of other interested groups from the area also came along to see how the game may benefit their own particular community groups. Cage 4 All Director, Simon Young, who attended the launch, spoke afterwards, “It is always wonderful to see new people have the opportunity to play Cage, but to see the fantastic enthusiasm with which everyone here this evening has played the game is wonderful. I know a few of the boys who were playing for the first time are already asking about how the game can take them forward, and the girls were developing their session tuned to their own skillsets. With the interest from a number of adult groups also shown this evening, Cage Cricket is going to be a big factor within communities over the coming months.”
